Sixth, seventh and eighth graders in Bartow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale counties are invited to participate in this annual essay contest promoting better water quality and water conservation practices in the metro Atlanta area. Save the Frogs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to amphibian conservation, invites you to create cool artwork that features frogs and says SAVE THE FROGS! or savethefrogs.com (or both) somewhere on it. The Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge is a national contest that rewards U.S. cities for recycling aluminum beverage cans. The challenge is sponsored by a partnership between the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Novelis Corporation, and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. A total of $70,000 will be awarded. The deadline to register is September 30, 2010.

The Siemens Competition seeks to promote excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects. It fosters intensive research that improves students' understanding of the value of scientific study and informs their consideration of future careers in these disciplines. Scholarships for winning projects range from $1,000 to $100,000. Submissions are due October 1, 2010 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

$1,000 will be awarded to a Georgia 3rd grade teacher who demonstrates exceptional energy and innovation in educating his or her class about the habitats of different organisms, the dependence of organisms on their habitat, and the effects of pollution and humans on the environment. The John Muir Association is accepting applications for the John Muir Conservation Award. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is now accepting submissions for its 5th annual digital photography competition. TNC is looking for beautiful nature photography representing the diversity of life on Earth. Original digital images of our lands, waters, plants, animals and people in nature are all eligible. Photographers must be at least 18 years old. Photos must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time October 4, 2010.

The Outdoor Classroom Service Award honors those who have contributed in significant and meaningful ways to the design, development, maintenance and use of outdoor classrooms. The winning recipient will receive a registration scholarship to attend the 2010 Outdoor Classroom Symposium and $100 to enhance their outdoor classroom. Apply by October 8, 2010.

The American Geological Institute is sponsoring three contests for Earth Science Week 2010. The theme of the photography contest, open to all ages, is "We Depend on Energy." The visual arts contest theme is "Energy on Earth;" open to grades K-5. Students in grades 6-9 are eligible to enter the essay contest: "How Energy Powers the Planet." Winners at the state level advance to the Canon Envirothon where they compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored President's Environmental Youth Awards recognizes young people across America for projects that demonstrate their commitment to the environment. All students who complete an environmental project and submit an application will receive a signed certificate from the President of the United States and one project from each of the ten EPA Regions will be presented with a Presidential plaque at an EPA sponsored award ceremony. Apply by December 31, 2010.

After December 1, the cost increases to $200. The final day to register is January 15, 2011.

ExploraVision is a science competition that encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. Awards are given in out in four grade levels (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12). The deadline for submission is February 2, 2011.

This challenge gives students the opportunity, tools and inspiration to become agents of change. High school student teams from across the country are challenged to create sustainable, energy-related environmental improvements that can be replicated by or impact others beyond their local community. Top prizes include thousands of dollars in scholarship money and more! The challenge opens August 17, 2010 and runs through March 15, 2011.

Children age 13 and under are invited to enter the Ranger Rick Photo Contest. Each winning entry will be featured in the Ranger Rick magazine and on Ranger Rick’s website. Winners will also receive a Certificate of Recognition and five copies of the Ranger Rick magazine featuring their entries. The contest is held three times per year.

The John Muir Youth Award aims to encourage young people to get involved in conservation and the protection of wilderness and biological diversity. This award is NOT a competition. If your students complete the project according to the five criteria, they will receive a certificate for their achievements.

The National Schoolyard Birding Challenge (NSBC) is a monthly bird watching contest open to students in all public and private schools in North America. Student participants in the NSBC will work together to observe, identify, and record various bird species found on their school grounds in a single month. Teams compete for prizes each month and will be entered to win monthly drawings. Observations are submitted monthly throughout the school year.

The Charles Edison Fund provides free units (for grades 4-8) on various experiments conducted by Thomas Edison and other scientists. The Fund also sponsors an awards program to help stimulate student interest in science. All participating students receive an engraved certificate. The top winner, as chosen by the teacher, receives an Edison sunburst light bulb t-shirt, matching baseball cap, and signed certificate of award.

By completing requirements to advance to higher levels of the Georgia Green & Healthy Schools program, schools earn awards and recognition. Awards include a certificate, banner, patches, awards ceremony, and grant eligibility. Schools may also maintain their accomplishments to earn renewal each school year. Submissions must be received by January 31 and June 30 each year.

The Clean Air Campaign works with schools throughout Georgia to reduce traffic and air pollution and create a healthier environment for Georgia students. Our Clean Air Schools initiative provides schools, students and parents with the tools to take action to help clean the air in their school and community.
